My six years experience in the art world has fine-tuned my sales, management and organization skills. Currently, I'm an independent art dealer and private consultant, while also managing a roster of mid-career artists. I’m experienced in everything within the art world, including primary and secondary sales, working closely with clients, art fairs, artist representation, overseeing gallery operations, curating exhibitions, web and print design, bookkeeping, art handling and installation, and managing staff. My last positions were director of Gallerie Icosahedron, Inc., curator at DLC Fine Art, and archivist at Walter Wickiser Gallery.
I have an every expanding list of connections in both the fine and commercial arts worlds, and it benefits every client and artist that I work with. While working at Gallerie Icosahedron, Inc. for only three short years, I invigorated their roster of artists, increased their collector base, curated many critically and financially successful exhibitions, descreased gallery expenses, and expanded the outreach of the gallery. Some of my career highlights were working closely with Judy Chicgo to produce a Feminist show during Women's History month, curating a Joseph Beuys and David Kastner two-man exhibition, and organizing a highly successful Shepard Fairy event and charity auction.
Before my professional experience within the art world, I was an integral figure in many sales, design, and IT departments. I became interested in joining the fine art world after a semester long internship at the Staller Center Gallery when earning my bachelor's degree in Art History and Criticism at Stony Brook University. After working in the graphic design and IT fields, and worked my way up to become the art director at the largest business brokerage in New York State. During this time, I developed my IT and sales skills to be a skilled computer technician and high volume salesman. At Walter Wickiser Gallery, which specializes in Contemporary Asian art, I was the archivist for all physical and digital media, designed everything from monthly invitation cards to a new dynamic website, assisted with day to day business and financial operations, co-curated a museum retrospective exhibition, maintained a network of Mac OSX computers, and also assisted with art handling, photography, writing, shipping, and overseeing the galleries printing business.
The key to all my success has been creating and maintaining relationships with my artists, my clients and my staff. Artists are a unique type of person; putting your soul into a work of art that becomes a commodity is a tough pill to swallow, but a dealer understands this. I am an artist myself, and know how to get the best out of them. You must balance insecurities, artistic intent, egos, and self-doubt. Understanding how the creative brain works and how to guide it towards a righteous path. My artists know me and I know them; how they think, how they work, and how to achieve the type of success they seek.
